DAY 2: IFRANE – ERFOUD – ZIZ VALLEY – MERZOUGA
Depart from Fes and journey through the lush landscapes of the Middle Atlas, stopping in Ifrane, a picturesque town often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its European-style chalets and gardens. After soaking in the refreshing ambiance, continue through the towering cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, home to the playful Barbary macaques. As you descend from the mountains, the landscape transforms into the vast, arid plains of the Ziz Valley, dotted with date palms and ancient ksars (fortified villages). Stop in Erfoud, known as the gateway to the Sahara, where you can see the process of fossil excavation before reaching the mesmerizing dunes of Merzouga. Awaken early to witness the spectacular sunrise over the Sahara, casting a warm glow across the endless dunes. After breakfast, ride your camel back to Merzouga, where your journey continues towards the rugged Todra Gorges. Along the way, marvel at the changing landscapes, from the barren desert to lush oases. Arrive at the Todra Gorges, where towering cliffs rise dramatically on either side of a crystal-clear river, creating a breathtaking natural corridor. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the gorge, taking in the stunning scenery and the cool, refreshing air. Continue to the Dades Gorges, passing through picturesque Berber villages and the fertile Dades Valley, known as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” As evening approaches, settle into a comfortable hotel nestled among the dramatic rock formations, where you can relax and enjoy the tranquility of the surrounding nature.
